One very long year later and here it is - despite hiccups along the way, and getting tired and stressed from time to time (apologies to all those who had to put up with me) I would not have missed doing this for anything. I feel as if I know every brick and floorboard of this house having scraped, sanded, painted and varnished just about everything (with the help of heroic friends).
The kitchen ended up a triumph despite the multiple belfast sink crisis - I had to run a rehoming centre for all the sinks I brought (or acquired) in error.
Now for the propaganda bit - so who wants smooth perfection - surely far better (and mercifully far far cheaper) to let houses develop organically. The plasterwork might not be perfect but it bounces the shadows in interesting ways, doors might not hang straight, but who cares they have charm, the fire tiles might be pitted and mismatched but they have a lovely terracotta warmth.
Thanks to Annie Sloane for her fabulous French chalk paints. This cheap yellow pine table and set of chairs now look considerably better for a coat of French Grey, which has then been sanded to give a sense of wear and waxed. These paints are fabulous - Annie has a shop in Headington, Oxford - and you can find the details on www.annie.sloan.com.
