Rapha Etape Evening

For those readers who are investing their blood, sweat and tears and taking part in this years installment of the Etape, Rapha are once again running their annual presentation to help prepare riders for a brutal but beautiful cycling experience.
On the 22nd June, Rapha will make available 80 places for each seminar, 2 are available for the two differing routes. After a full reconnaissance of Alpe d’Huez and the Massif Centrale, detailed advice on appropriate tactics, gearing and fuelling for the race will be given by both Rapha staff and also staff from Cyclefit.
Held at the stylish Charlotte Street hotel, the two sessions will be available together for a bargain price of £20, or each route briefing can be purchased separately for a meager £15. Drinks will be served during the interval and I should imagine it would be a great session to meet other folk to form some useful alliances. Here's the deets >
    • The venue is the Charlotte Street Hotel, 15 – 17 Charlotte Street, London, W1T 1RJ [ map ]
    • Pre-presentation drinks and canapes will be served at 6.30pm.
    • The presentation for Etape I begins at 7.00pm.
    • The presentation for Etape II begins at 8.30pm and finishes at 9.30pm.
    • There will be an interval with drinks at 8pm.
    • Price per session is £15 or £20 for both.
Im advised that this event sells out pretty quick so be sure to head on over to Rapha to purchase aticket post haste should you be interested.

Royal Kilometers... A Tale Of Two Riders

radio four's today programme switches on at 6am; or to be more precise, at 5:50, since the digital alarm is ten minutes fast. i, on the other hand, sleep ten minutes slow, so allowing for the international dateline, i have no real idea when i awoke to the sound of impending matrimonial bliss.
the mighty dave t and i do not favour fuss and palaver. we could live happily ever after without fol de rol, even if it is taking place several hundred miles and several million quid south of here. don't get me wrong, we are most grateful to kate and wills for the day off, but since they were never likely to join us for a bike ride, it seemed only fair that we reciprocate and leave them alone to their nuptials.
the theory goes thus: we will be the only two individuals not glued to either television or radio, and able to pedal unfettered along the highways and byways of the principality. we are, however, not without feelings, not immune to the sense of occasion that allowed for a day off in the first place. so we began the morning with a celebratory cappuccino.
strictly speaking, i'm the only one to benefit, for the mighty dave is a pensioner (he must have told you at least once?), and every day is a day off. those benefits were happily accepted, at least until the lunchtime ferry traffic defeated the point of holidaying on the island of manana and raced past with rumbling exhausts.
our allegiance to the crown was further demonstrated by the affixation of union jacks to both seatposts, that the sheep and cattle lining the lower slopes of the glen road would not mistake this for just any old bike ride. but first to the essentials. of the little i heard on radio four this morning, all eyes were metaphorically on the dress, so it seems only fair to abate the concern prior to pedalling into the wide blue yonder.
i had chosen a nice little black number with short sleeves and red arm warmers, matched with semi-shiny shorts of the bib variety. these were accessorised with some natty richard sachs socks and a renner sport cap. on an occasion such as this, nothing less than tan leather shoes seemed seemly. the mighty dave was clad in the red white and blue of a rapha tour of britain jersey.
our major concern was perhaps being caught up in a street party somewhere near ballygrant village, but our fears came to naught (along with the notion of any street party), and a most enjoyable 70km were covered with nary a hitch, and blissfully royal wedding free. a celebratory lunch of cheese and tomato chutney roll, tray bake and a complimentary digestive biscuit was accompanied by yet another soya cappuccino. the mighty dave elected to dine at home, where a traditional arbroath smokey awaited.
my royal wedding bike ride was not yet over. there were far more windy kilometres (a 45kph breeze) to be undertaken off round by kilchoman distillery, islay's atlantic coast and a veritable slog along the belgian road past ballinaby.
you really do have to feel sorry for those hard at work during the day, when surely the carbon, steel or aluminium called vainly from the bikeshed; those who missed out on glorious blue skies and the sound of a chain clicking through the jockey wheels.

did you enjoy your day miss atkinson?

    ==========================================================

    Dear Brian -

My alarm crudely buzzes buried beneath my pillow, its harsh tone ringing in my ear at the ungodly hour of 4am. You see its the 28th of April - it is the day that Wills & Kate are to be married, and im about to undertake a day of (dare I say it....) 'epic' editing....
I roll myself out of bed, bleary eyed, and begin the morning ritual of cross checking my equipment bag whilst simultaneously co-ordinating a very modest hair and make-up effort. All aided by an extra large cup of Colombia's finest beans in liquid form.
I grab my bag and down jacket, and begin to walk to the train station - destination Westminster. As the sun slowly rises and dawn breaks, Im sadly too tired to appreciate how lovely this dear city can look at this time in the morning.
A solitary cyclist rides past on the bridge. I am momentarily overcome with enormous jealousy. I knew that as a national bank holiday, many of our two wheeled fraternity will be taking to the lanes of Surrey, Hertfordshire and Kent to spend a day at the pleasure of the royal family, dancing along the pedals, whilst the only thing that will be dancing for me today will be my eyes across the screen!
I hop aboard the first Upminster bound train, and not surprisingly found it was awash with blue, red and white. Young, old and everyone in-between sit and stand excitedly in the carriage. Flags clasped in closed fists, flags worn across the backs of many and too many novelty hats than I could count lucidly (hey it was 5:20am!).
Arriving at my destination (a small satellite office set up opposite the Abbey) I again made a beeline for the caffeine supply, and took my place at my editing desk. The time was 6am.... this was going to be one long day indeed!
With over 40 photographers shooting that day, the enormity of the task soon dawned on the editing team - this was going to be one super heavy day indeed.
As we waited for the first images of the day to hit, I tortured myself by looking at photos I had taken the night before of my beautiful new Condor Acciaio (Bianchista says - expect a ride report this week after a thorough test in the Yorkshire Dales). I imagined rolling out to eat up some tarmac on the beautiful steel addition to my stable with friends in the Surrey hills, but my thoughts were soon interrupted as the opening images began to file into the server.
Breakfast comes and goes - marked by a quick journey from my seat to the croissant tray and back - all the time work filing in. Images of the day begin to tell the story, and with so many of the businesses best photographers posted in many weird and wonderful positions (including some balcony and rooftop hero's) we soon amass a plethora of fabulous pictures, and thus the eventful day was beginning to take shape.
Lunchtime came and went so fast, my hand never leaving the mouse, photoshop actions firing off left, right and centre. My screen filled up with a constant stream of pictures; guests, fans, the procession and finally the cars. The cars! it was revealed Miss Middleton (the moniker she would soon be exchanging for rather a more grander title) looked elegant in a beautiful laced McQueen number. The ladies in the office (myself included) became excitable I don't mind admitting. Everyone loves a fairytale wedding and this was certainly shaping up that way.
There is not much more to say about the day. A blow by blow recant of the wedding details is not needed. I worked and plugged away moving incredible pictures of an event so important, not just in its stature, but in the fact that if only for a day - the whole nation was reunited and forgot all the problems and hassles and politics. It was simply - just a joyous occasion.
We wound down at approximately 8:30pm - and began the laborious task of packing down the equipment ready to ship back to HQ that evening. Im sad I missed out on some good riding that day - but I cant be too sad as it was an extraordinary day in the office so to speak.
And thus my day ends as it began... with a tired stroll across Hammersmith Bridge to the refuge of my warm comfy bed, comforted in the knowledge that the chance to pedal will come as soon as I awake the next day. All sense of tranquility is soon restored, what a day!

Should you wish to read more about the adventures of Islay's most sartorially-estute cyclist & blogger - I implore you to head on over and spend some time in the wonderful world of the Washing Machine Post

Hell!

There's not much to say about this years installant of HOTN, our ride was blighted by 5 punctures (myself taking the lions share of the gang with 4 on the front wheel) and not to mention Rowland's rear derailleur hanger shearing off and snapping just as he descended into the forest section!
The ride was yet again treated to sublime perfect weather conditions, with the sun out and temperatures hovering around 21 degrees for the most part of the day.
The Rowland brothers hit the school track
This year there was a new sector taking in a deserted school yard, bringing back memories as the three of us queued for the water fountain. The ride was great, with 250 riders hammering down all manner of dirt tracks and gravel encrusted bridleways. A bottle of beligian brew and box of frites awaited every rider as we reached the pub in Barnet. For us three merry cyclists, this came a little sooner than anticipated after the derailleur hanger blow out. Cue some ingenious bike modifications and a broken chain and Si was able to TT with us straight to the pub after around mile 35 of the route. Although he had a 'banana chain' spirits were high, until my 4th puncture on the way home, due to my rim tape glue melting and the whole tape shifting to expose several holes! Minus points here for schwalbe tape!
    Oh dear!
    testing mechanicals in the sun
    SS ghetto-style

All in all was a fab day in the sun and we chalked up 113k by the time we landed at home, albeit a little frazzled. And what about the race? a cracking result for the journey man Van Summeren, and in particular a bit of a fairytale ending, hammering out 5km on a flat tyre to propose to his girlfriend at the finish. Now thats what I want to see in my racing! fabulous stuff....
Gavin over at the wicked Spinwell blog was shooting the HOTN for rapha, so expect some wicked snaps appearing on their blog soon!

Bianchista's HOTN tips

For all those 250 of you to grab a place on rapha's 'Hell of the North' paris-roubaix tribute ride, a 100km rollercoaster of mudded paths, gravel encrusted bridleways and er.... actual fields, I thought I would share some tips that might help after my experience last year on this super fun ride. Whilst its not quite as awesome as tips from Michael Barry its a few pointers that may help...
    1) Carry a tube, mini pump patches and CO2!
Its essential you are prepared for a non-stressed flat fix. Ensure that between your group you have enough supplies for a couple of punctures, our group escaped with only one last year, but be prepared for the unknown surfaces.
    2) A generous slather of suncream goes a long way.
Last year temps were around 20 degrees, and we came home with gnarly sunburn on our arms. Dont underestimate the power of the suns rays just because its springtime.
    3) Wear suitable shoes/cleats.
This year il be wearing my commuter sidi mtb spd's - as last year I had my ride ruined by the fact id worn speedplays and mud had clogged my cleats meaning I couldn't engage the pedal, resulting in my sitting almost in tears trying to dig mud out with a twig, only for it to clog up further down the road. Even though the roads and tracks should be dry, there are some mudded sections completely covered by trees, so they will remain damp whatever the conditions.
    4) Ride safe, ride smart!
Its not a race with prizes, so don't ride with undue care causing danger to those fellow riders around you. Also the drag out there takes a fairly main road through and out Barnet. Here you will be sharing roads with weekend traffic. Ride courteously and safely - this isn't part of the ride to show off your 'awesome' overtaking skills and bike based road-rage. Save that for the grave!
    5) If you see anyone struggling, offer some words of encouragement or offer a hand in a mechanical situation.
    6) Look out for the pink arrows on the road, otherwise be prepared for some hard iphone map reading lessons!

Mountain/Machine

Nick Livesey, of the 'A Throw Of The Dice' movie fame has put together a book using images captured from a self constructed pinhole camera, documenting the annual Fireflies ride, a nine day epic journey of 1000km that raises money for Leukemia reserach at the Hammermith Hospital.
The books will be produced in a strictly limited print run, with proceeds heading straight to the fundraising pot. A wonderful idea and it looks to be filled with romantic, dark and interesting imagery. Director Ridley Scott said of the book “Weather-ravaged, high open spaces contrast with clinical and claustrophobic (yet lifesaving) machinery… the pictures are both uplifting and darkly unsettling.”

Mountain/Machine is available to order from Rapha for £40

Bianchista @ Le Tour

This weekend I was privileged enough to be sent to work at the tour by my firm, Getty Images. I'm a photo editor based in London but this summer presented me with the opportunity to travel to both South Africa for the world cup (64 games, exhausting but amazing) and also to the Tour de France for the final stage. Guess which one I was most excited about?!

I was incredibly privileged to be out there editing for Bryn Lennon, a snapper who is superb when it comes to cycling. Bryn really knows his stuff when it comes to stories, rider politics and capturing a moment that conveys the main protagonists. Along with Bryn I was also there to edit for Spencer Platt. I wrote a previous blog post on Spencer here. His award winning work in war zones needs no introduction, and being a big rider himself, he took some amazing photos that really complemented Bryn's style, by offering things from a different perspective.

Arriving in Paris on Saturday, I milled around from my base in Saint Augustin, hiring a velib on the recommendation of Alex, and cycled up the Champs Elysee. Lord knows how those guys sustain the speed and control they do, what with the cobbled surface and super tight corner at the top!

On Sunday I was taken to go collect my accreditation from the press centre, seeing Frank Schleck as I was walking in! Dude was in good spirits. The moto driver for Getty was Koen Hardens, and he had a long old chat with Saxo mechanic Christophe Desimpelaere, whom i wanted a snap with cos he looks a gnarly dude indeed. I also bumped in Dave Brailsford and got a snap and said hello.

At the accreditation desk, the girl was giving some guy sh*t about him not being on the list or whatever... which was incredibly amusing..... as she was shunning none other than ex-world champion Paolo Bettini! He laughed with myself and Koen at the girl blatantly not having a clue who he was. The story had a happy ending and I can confirm Paolo got his passes.

Then it was time to head to the Champs, I basically sat in the top area in the middle of the course, right by the Skoda on the Champs. The peloton whizzed by abouit 12 inches from my face! Here I was passed CF cards from Bryn down on the finish the finish line via Koen and some handy driving and Spencer was stationed up with myself. Queue lots of tech issues concerning France's appalling 3g network (1kb per second really ain't going to cut it when iv got 100 images to send to clients on the wire Mr Sarkozy!)

I had around 3500 images to edit..... Crouching over my laptop screen with a coat over my head to avoid glare, I furiously selected the best of the bunch and got them fired out. When editing pictures its my job to select and sort out (photoshop, resize, send etc) the images that convey the main stories (actually the undercurrents too!) of the event but also give a feeling of the atmosphere. To be working under such intense pressure from the field solo is great when it goes well, id say the only downside was I was in such an incredible position yet I couldn't soak it up or appreciate it as any true cycling fan would... I was there to do a job, and not 'soak it up' as it were :-)
What was amazing was being chanted at by a massive group of American fans in the crowd, i think I went bright red! I gave them a wave and the crowd cheered. haha famous for a minute. I also loved being driven down the champs behind the peltoon with an open laptop filing images in one hand (that pesky connection!) and holding on for dear life with the other hand. Epic!

After the race ended and the winners dutifully presented themselves on the podium, I headed to a backstreet bar to fire in more images... I worked for around 2 hours there as Bryn and Spencer joined me when they had completed shooting the riders procession etc.

In the evening we hooked up with our company CFO who was out there for some riding and touring in France, enjoyed a few drinks before hooking up with Tim de Wale and a couple of drunk Swiss Radio girls. We then headed to the Oakley party, finally arriving at 4am after getting epically lost, however when I saw Thor Hushovd stumbling out I knew we had found the right place!

Hopefully next year I can wangle getting out for the full three weeks as I wont be obliged to be at a major football tournament :-) Below is a low-res selection of some of my favorite images, captured by some incredibly talented guys. Massive thanks to Bryn & Spencer for being the most ego-less and awesome efficient guys to work with. And a huge thanks to Getty for saying yes to me asking to head out! The whole Getty image gallery can be found HERE and of course purchased for press usage.
