Sunlight in Dorchester Abbey

Dorchester Abbey - watercolour and mixed media by John Piper, 1973

Dorchester Abbey is a perfect walk from Wittenham Clumps.

The Abbey Church is all that remains and is an austere building, with large windows and soaring slender architecture. All is harmony and plainness, but as the sunlight passed through the windows the pale sandstone colours were tinted with glowing colour.

The angel in this restored Victorian fresco acquires a medieval intensity....

Sunlight spills across the tomb of Sarah Fletcher who died a martyr to excessive sensibility (it is tempting to smile but her story is a sad one).
