Friday Box Office: Universal's 'Fast Five' on Track for $75 Million Weekend - Latest Hollywood News Gossips

Disney's "Prom" eyeing $2 million to $2.5 million on its first day in theaters and Fox holdover "Rio" continues to perform strong.

Universal’s Fast Five is on track to open as high as $75 million in North America in a key win for Universal and the movie biz, which has been suffering one of the worst downturns at the domestic box office in recent memory.

Fast Five — directed by Justin Lin, one of Hollywood’s hottest young talents — looks like it will gross $30 million to $35 million on Friday, including $3.7 million in midnight runs.

Among other new openers, Disney’s tween-fueled Prom should gross $2 million to $2.5 million for the day. The studio is hoping the movie, costing $8 million to produce, will open to at least $7 million. It’s the first film greenlit by Disney Studios topper Rich Ross to open in theaters.

But all eyes are on Fast Five, which reunites franchise stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster and Tyrese Gibson. Joining the series is Dwayne Johnson.

The $3.7 million in midnight runs at the domestic box office was the best ever for a Universal title and the biggest for the action franchise, nearly double the $1.8 million earned by 2009's Fast & Furious, the previous title in the franchise.

Overseas, Fast Five grossed $7.6 million on Thursday as it moved into five more territories, bringing its foreign cume to $43.7 million and worldwide total to $47.4 million.

Among holdovers at the domestic office, 20th Century Fox’s Rio continues to hold strong and should come in No. 2 for the weekend.
